Even CNN Agrees: Obama gives tax money back to NON Tax Payers!

advertisement

For all of you silly people who keep saying "...you can't cut people's taxes who do not pay taxes..." or "...Obama means he will only cut taxes for the taxpayers..." take a good at left-leaning CNN. They say what others have been saying for weeks. Obama's plan will give tax credits to people who do not pay income taxes and they will be entitled to have that money paid to them even though they did not pay the money in.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

No sure what writer you are referring to but I was against all of the bailouts and said so on NewsVine.  You can't say your for responsibilty unless your for responsibility across the board.  I am.

As the article states, these people do pay taxes.  You are talking only about Federal income tax.  That is only one type of tax paid by most tax payers.

In point of fact, the wealthy pay approximately the same rate in taxes that the poor do.  The reason: taxes on gasoline, property, food, state and local income taxes, FICA, Social Security, etc. etc.

You are only talking about one type of tax.  Your view is simplistic.

    Ahh my old friend George...

The Obama tax plan is about income taxes.  Nothing else.  That is the point of the discusssion.  Not property taxes, not sales taxes, not social security taxes...once again your are simply incorrect when you say that the rich and poor pay approximately the same rate...Income tax rates from from 0% to 36%.  That means the more you make, the more you pay.

That is not true, Russ.  Income tax rates are what you say, but poor people pay taxes just as much as rcih people do.

Studies have shown that factoring in all the taxes paid by the rich and the poor, the rates come out to a 1 percentage point difference, 19% for the rich; 18% for the poor.

You are the one who is incorrect.

George,  We are not talking about "all" taxes.  We are discussing income taxes.  Yes everyone does pay all of the other taxes.  If you buy gas, you pay gas taxes.  If you own a property, you pay property taxes.  If you buy things, you pay sales taxes.  Nobody is arguing that.  We are talking about income taxes.  Taxes you pay on your income.  Taxes that get withheld from your paycheck.  Taxes that get paid or refunded when you file an income tax return.

Since you are not talking about the point of the discussion, you are the wrong one here.

BTW...every factoid I have ever seen indicates people pay around 50% of their incomes in taxes whenever you take them all into account so I am highly doubtful you can point to a study that says people only pay 19% of their income in taxes.

        Russ,

Your factiods are wrong.  And I just don't have the time to school you in tax policy in this country.

As for your statement that it was just income taxes: That is not what you said.  Again, I just don't have time to explain it to you.

          George,

Not to worry.  I already understand it perfectly well.

On the other hand, I can only doubt someone's grasp of this topic who claims that the poor pay as much taxes as the rich.

funny that you bring this up.

while in graduate school, the only job i've held is part time teaching and it pays very little.

i have not made enough to pay taxes in each of the last 3 years.

i still file though, because i did make some money and guess what..  george w bush has always given me money back, even though ive paid none in.  one year i got a note from the IRS saying that they were amending my return for me and that i would be receiving a check

i think what you are describing is an earned income credit and its been in the tax code for some time.

True but this time it is being expanded and the way it is being paid for is by increasing taxes on other people.  Taking from some and giving it to others.  That is welfare, not a "tax cut".

Also George Bush does not give you that money.  That money is paid to you by the school and then withheld on your account by the school and sent to the IRS for them to hold.  When you file and get your tax refund, that is what it is...a refund of your taxes.  I do understand the EIC also gives money back to people who do not earn enough and they get more back than they paid in but that is for a different purpose.  Obama's plan is to give people back money who actually have full time jobs but still do not pay income taxes.  Then others' taxes are raised so those working people can get more money back than they paid ion.

If that is the plan, fine.  But do not cxall it a "tax cut".  It is a gift from those who pay to those you don't.  It needs to be called as such.

actually i know that i wont earn enough, so i have none withheld.

i'm just pointing out that there already is such a system in place.  you are correct that obama with redidistrubute the tax burden, but he is doing it in such a way that puts more of it on the wealthiest of americans where it should be.

The money comes from those who pay the taxes.  In Obama's plan, that means raising taxes on other people in order to give money to people who are already not paying taxes.  Not poor people per se.  His first refundable tax credit is for anyone who has a job.  Have a job, get money back you did not put in!  Such a deal!

How can you call an expansion "welfare" and yet apparently have no problem with the current implementation?  If they had originally started it this way, would you have a problem with it?

Helping people is not a bad thing.  But occasionally we need to reconsider HOW we help them.  Ceasing to help people at all is not an option.

Nobody is saying stop helping people who need it.

What we are saying is how about calling it what it is...help in the form of welfare.  Stop calling it help in the form of a tax cut.  It is an expansion from actual poor people who get EIC to working people who simply are not making enough money.  If you want the tax burden to be less on people, then cut taxes and call it such.  Giving them money back and calling it a tax credit is dishonest and not what America is all about.

We are about helping people who need help and expecting everyone else to pull their own weight and go out and achieve for themselves.
